The time will come—perhaps within the next century in North America—when a critical mass of the populace will recognize the folly of religious belief. A national and global consensus will form that religion is bunk. The scale will tip. Atheism will become the common understanding regarding whether deities and afterlives are real. Some isolated contrarians will persist, just as Flat-Earthers persist today, but the paradigm will have shifted. (Recall that the Flat Earth was the prevailing theory before early scientists discovered our planet is a sphere.)
American society will then enter the post-Christian era, which has already begun in parts of Western Europe where the majority of the population of some countries is nonreligious. When the global tipping point is reached, the planet’s entire population will enter the post-religion era. From that time forward, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and other superstitions will be viewed as similarly quaint and intellectually primitive as sun-god worship is today. Democratic governments will follow their people—autocratic governments might lag since dictators often use religion to control their subjects.
That paradigm shift might happen surprisingly quickly, at least in Western democracies in which the penalty for apostasy is modest. American public opinion about same-sex marriage changed in only a very few years—over 50% of Americans now (2014) support equal rights for gays. Discriminatory laws began to change quickly once the tipping point was reached.
Similarly, once atheism becomes the majority public opinion, lawmakers will feel sufficiently safe politically to come out of the closet themselves and begin to unwind the accumulated intrusions of religion into American government listed above. Truly secular government can then be achieved, as envisioned by America’s Founding Fathers, several of whom were atheists.
Muslim theocracies, however, might take much longer to dismantle the political and societal structures that enforce Islam. After all, in countries like Saudi Arabia where apostasy is punished by death, what official would dare be first to suggest that Allah is a big lie?
My optimism for such a secular future is tempered by the fact that humans have invented tens of thousands of religions during their history as a species, which implies propensity for religiosity. Therefore, we should expect subpopulations of scientifically ignorant believers to persist, led by self-serving demagogues adhering to religious myths despite removal of the governmental and societal supports they now enjoy.

Just in case you were tempted, I would suggest ignoring Stan. He is an irrational blogger who confuses everything with Atheism. He has a disdain for anything that is not like him. He coined the term ‘Atheo-Left’ to make sure we all understand how illogical his views are, not getting the irony that the Left and Atheism and completely different topics, regardless of how much they overlap.
He is the champion of logical fallacy with his constant request to prove that Atheism is right, instead of him trying to explain why anyone should believe in his god, he likes to claim that Atheism is a VOID (his emphasize), not understanding that, indeed, Atheism is nothing more than the rejection of unsupported religious claims.
The list could go on… but I am sure anyone can tell by looking at his blog. It’s wroth peeking at, come pretty funny stuff in there. Just don’t give him the satisfaction of being engaged in what he might think is a serious discussion… he is not worth it.
…multiple typos, sorry…
“It’s worth peeking at, some pretty funny stuff in there.”
Bob,
Come on over and prove your points.
You cannot do it, and you know it. So what you do is to bad mouth rather than to take direct action such as actual disciplined deduction for support of your worldview. That is intellectual cowardice.
One thing about Atheists who generally go Left is that they no longer care about supporting their claims of logic and evidence. They become very shy about showing up to an actual logical analysis of their positions, because there is no rational, logical support for their positions. Pure intellectual cowardice.
Just stopped in to check on this website. Glad to see Stan is still tapping away in pursuit of… I’m not exactly sure what he’s waiting to hear from me. “Oh my! I see the error of my ways! I believe. I believe!!”
There’s nothing to prove. My ethos doesn’t involve fantastic claims with no proof or logical consistency with the natural, observable world. I get, at best, a few dozen more trips around the local star before I die, and I choose to live that life grounded in that which I can observe and quantify. The laws of physics that govern the motion of bodies, the physical consistency of chemical elements throughout the universe, mathematical notations that describe symmetry in nature: this is my logic and my evidence. I don’t draw unnecessary conclusions from these precepts as others do and make the grand claim that some magical deity has set things in motion and worries about the daily goings on of one particular species of homonids.
I work within the reality that human intelligence has uncovered and continues to uncover. You chose to work within the best reality that human intelligence of the Bronze Age could conceive. How retro of you.
Author’s Note: In advance, understand that I do not check this website often. In the event that you comment back, and even if I do see it, I likely won’t respond. It’s not because I don’t think you’re a super guy, it’s simply because I don’t give a shit. As sad and pathetic as you think my life may be, what without God and all, I have a great many things in my life toward which to devote my efforts, and “appeasing the incessant, derogatory, and redundant inquiries made by nagging Christian apologists” ranks pretty low in priority. <-- I think I'll add that to the About page.

Hm. As I suspected, this Atheist is not interested in responding to any challenges to the irrationality of his position – which he cannot prove using the declarations of reality he has made. His Materialism is the standard Philosophical Materialism which is demonstrably internally inconsistent and therefore paradoxical. It is easily proven to be a false ideology, not
objective knowledge obtained through empirical experimentation, nor disciplined deduction from first principles.
But it is his right to believe whatever his senses tell him, with no analysis beyond that. It is everyone’s right not to pursue the comprehension of the nature of truth and the rational process to challenge intellectual falseness and sloth.
