One day in college I answered the door to find two students taking a survey about religion. I pleasantly agreed to take it and invited them in. After some basic demographic questions, they asked "Do you believe in god?" I simply said "no." They both stared at me, shocked, like I had just said I enjoy roasting kittens in the microwave. Why this reaction? Because I seemed like a nice person and didn't fit the stigma attached to atheism. Well, I am a nice person AND an atheist, and I hope they realized that day that the two are not mutually exclusive. I still get this all the time. I can't tell you the number of times my beliefs have prompted a "Really?? I never would have guessed that about you." I enjoy it though--it's somewhat satisfying to challenge people's prejudices, even if you will never see eye to eye on religion.

"If you can tell me what to think, I can tell you where to go."
--Unknown
